What 90 days means

Ninety days out is one of the most functionally important windows on this list: it approximates a fiscal quarter, is the standard length of many new-hire performance or probationary periods in US employment, and is commonly used in lay usage as a rough stand-in for the length of a pregnancy trimester (clinically, trimesters are defined by weeks of gestation rather than a fixed 90-day count).

Ninety calendar days is not the same as three exact calendar months — depending on which specific months the span crosses, three real calendar months can run anywhere from 89 to 92 days, a gap that occasionally matters for contract deadlines specified in "calendar months" rather than a fixed day count.

It's also the standard maximum stay permitted under a large number of visa-waiver travel programs, including the Schengen Area's 90-days-in-any-180-days rule for many non-EU visitors.
