In several historically Catholic European countries, including France and Poland, the day is marked with visits to family graves and the placing of chrysanthemums, a specific regional custom distinct from the day's purely liturgical origin.

In parts of the Philippines, families often spend the night at cemeteries with food and lit candles on this date, a distinctly festive rather than solemn regional take on the same Christian observance.
