About Flag Day (US)
June 14 commemorates the 1777 adoption of the Stars and Stripes as the official flag of the United States by resolution of the Second Continental Congress, replacing the earlier Grand Union Flag used during the first part of the Revolutionary War.
Flag Day was first observed informally in various communities starting in the late 19th century, and was formally proclaimed a national observance by President Woodrow Wilson in 1916, though it remains a federal observance rather than a paid federal holiday.
Pennsylvania is the only US state that observes Flag Day as an official state holiday with paid time off, despite the day's national origin and its informal observance elsewhere in the country.
Wisconsin schoolteacher Bernard Cigrand is widely credited as an early individual advocate for a national flag observance, having organized one of the first known Flag Day programs at his school in 1885, decades before Wilson's national proclamation.
