August 13 was founded in 1992 by the Left-Handers Club, a UK-based organization, to celebrate left-handed people's uniqueness and raise awareness of the everyday inconveniences a right-hand-designed world creates for them.

Left-handedness occurs in roughly 10% of the global population according to most studies, a minority share that has remained fairly stable across the populations and time periods researchers have studied.

The day is marked with campaigns highlighting left-hand-friendly product design, from scissors to school desks, and by some schools and workplaces with informal awareness events.

Historically, left-handedness was often actively discouraged or even forcibly "corrected" in schools in many countries well into the 20th century, a practice modern research has found offered no benefit and occasionally caused lasting difficulties for affected individuals.

Left-Handers Day advocacy has expanded in recent years to include workplace ergonomics, covering left-hand-friendly computer mice, kitchen tools, and sports equipment as practical, purchasable accommodations.
