About US Labor Day (reference)

US Labor Day is statutorily the first Monday in September, established as a federal holiday in 1894 honoring the American labor movement, following a period of significant labor unrest including the Pullman Strike earlier that same year.

It's distinct from the May 1 International Workers' Day observed in many other countries — a genuine, deliberate historical split, since the US moved its labor holiday to September specifically to avoid association with the more radical political connotations May Day had acquired in Europe by the late 1800s.

The holiday's fixed position on the calendar's first Monday in September also makes it an informal cultural marker for the unofficial "end of summer" in much of the US, even though the actual autumn equinox falls roughly three weeks later.

Oregon was the first US state to make Labor Day an official holiday, doing so in 1887, seven years before the federal government followed suit nationally.
