November 11 in the United States originated as Armistice Day, marking the armistice that ended fighting in World War I, which took effect on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month in 1918.

It was renamed Veterans Day in 1954 to honor all US military veterans rather than specifically World War I veterans, and is distinct from Memorial Day, which specifically honors those who died in military service.

Unlike Memorial Day, which is a floating last-Monday-in-May holiday, Veterans Day is fixed to November 11 regardless of weekday, directly preserving its link to the specific hour, day, and month of the original 1918 armistice.

Several other countries mark the same November 11 date under different names tied to the same WWI armistice, including Remembrance Day in the UK and Canada, both observed with a moment of silence at 11am local time.
