What Day Was the launch of Sputnik 1?

the launch of Sputnik 1

Friday, 10/4/1957

About this date

The Soviet Union launched Sputnik 1, the first artificial satellite to orbit Earth, a beach-ball-sized aluminum sphere that transmitted a simple radio signal as it circled the planet roughly every 96 minutes.

The launch shocked the American public and government, directly triggering the Space Race and contributing to the creation of NASA less than a year later.

The satellite itself burned up re-entering Earth's atmosphere only a few months after launch, its batteries having depleted after about three weeks of transmitting its distinctive radio beeps.

The satellite's simple radio beeps could reportedly be picked up by amateur radio operators worldwide, allowing ordinary citizens outside the Soviet and American space programs to track its progress overhead in real time.

The satellite's success prompted the US to rapidly accelerate its own space and science education funding, including the National Defense Education Act passed the following year to boost American math and science training.
