What Day Was the sinking of the Titanic?

the sinking of the Titanic

Monday, 4/15/1912

About this date

RMS Titanic sank in the North Atlantic after striking an iceberg the night before, roughly two hours and forty minutes after the collision, on its maiden voyage from Southampton to New York.

More than 1,500 people died, and the disaster led directly to major changes in maritime safety regulation, including the requirement for enough lifeboats for all passengers and crew.

The ship carried lifeboats for only about half the people aboard, a shortfall that met the safety regulations of the time but was drastically revised afterward, and its wreck wasn't located on the ocean floor until 1985.

The ship's radio operators reportedly received but dismissed some earlier iceberg warnings from nearby vessels, since they were preoccupied relaying passenger messages, a detail cited in later analyses of the disaster's contributing factors.
