What Day Was the founding of the United Nations?
the founding of the United Nations
About this date
The United Nations officially came into existence when its founding charter, agreed upon at a conference in San Francisco earlier that year, was ratified by a required majority of signatory countries including the five permanent Security Council members.
The UN succeeded the League of Nations, which had failed to prevent World War II, with an expanded mandate covering international security, human rights, and economic and social development.
The UN Charter's ratification requirement specifically named the five permanent Security Council members (the US, UK, France, the Soviet Union, and the Republic of China) alongside a majority of other signatories, a structure still in place today.
The San Francisco conference that produced the UN Charter brought together representatives from 50 countries over roughly two months, one of the largest diplomatic gatherings held up to that point in history.
