October 24 marks the anniversary of the 1945 entry into force of the United Nations Charter, following its ratification by a majority of signatory countries including the five permanent Security Council members — the same date on which the UN itself is considered to have officially come into existence.

It's observed with events at UN offices and by member states worldwide, marking the organization's founding mission around international peace, security, and cooperation.

The UN now has 193 member states, having grown considerably from the 51 founding members present when the Charter took effect in 1945.

The UN's founding members explicitly included newly liberated and Allied nations from the just-ended World War II, a deliberate contrast to the earlier League of Nations, which had notably excluded the defeated Central Powers after World War I.
